Soda lime ACS is a white or grey solid that is a mixture of calcium hydroxide and sodium or potassium hydroxide. This compound is soluble in water with the release of heat. Its chemical formula is CaHNaO2. Additionally, it contains a pH-sensitive indicator dye, such as phenolphthalein, which changes color as the soda lime absorbs carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the surrounding environment. The primary constituents, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide, act as strong bases that readily react with acidic gases like CO₂.
